For optimum performance it is important to choose a metal deck fixing that is suitable for outdoor use.
Corrosion of metal fixings is one of the biggest problems that can affect the performance and longevity of your deck. Using an unsuitable fixing can lead to surface staining and could also lead to the premature failure of your deck, compromising the entire structure and reducing the service life.
We would recommend using a stainless-steel deck screw to fix your decking. This should be approx. 2.5 times the thickness of the deck board being fixed. Screws should be positioned at quarter points i.e. 25% in from the board edges and 25mm from the board ends. There should be 2 screws per joist.
Fixing the decks screws flush with the surface helps to avoid any water retention which can occur as the timber naturally moves over time, deck screws can easily be adjusted as this happens. An advantage to using screws over a nail or clip is that boards are more secure and can be easily removed to allow for maintenance, remodelling or repairs.
